It's been an exciting month for Detroit sports, and now it's time to mix the action with a little bit of local music.
The Detroit Red Wings and 89X (CIMX-FM, 88.7) have partnered up for the "Motor City Music Minute," a new video series featuring music from local musicians.
Hosted by 89X music director and DJ Jay Hudson, the "Motor City Music Minute" will be shown on the Jumbotron at Joe Louis Arena between the second and third periods of each Detroit Red Wings home game, giving local artists another outlet to be heard.
"It's 60 seconds worth of Red Wings highlights over one of the band's songs," says Hudson, who has been a longtime supporter of the local music scene and since 2007 the host of "The Homeboy Show," a local music program airing at 10 p.m. Sundays at 89X. "We set it up on 'The Homeboy Show,' " says Hudson. "We announce what bands will be partaking in this."
The new series debuted at last week's Red Wings home opener and featured music from Every Avenue, a pop-punk band from Marysville, currently on a U.S. tour supporting Yellowcard.
On tap for tonight's game is music from Detroit rockers Core Effect. Pop-punk from Fireworks is set to be featured Oct. 21.
"I think it's better than ever," says Hudson of the local scene. "It's always been kind of big, but there are more different styles of music coming out. It's not just one genre. It seems to be well-rounded."
On the horizon, "Motor City Music Minute" will feature music from the Black Milk & Jack White collaboration, We Came As Romans, and Windsor's Richy Nix and MicLordz & Sauce Funky.
"Being from Detroit and coming over to Canada to work, I understand both cities," says Hudson. "I know what's hip in each city."
You can hear these artists and more on Hudson's "The Homeboy Show," which he describes as "one hour of totally different programming than what you would hear on the station."
